Starting School

A warm welcome to Christleton Primary School and thank you for taking the time to consider our school for your child.

Choosing the right school is one of the most important decisions you will ever make.

Your decision will be influenced by many factors, standards, reputation, word of mouth, locality to name a few.

Undoubtedly one of the best ways to get to know a school is to visit in person. There is nothing like seeing a school first hand, observing the children enjoying their learning, seeing the facilities and meeting the staff. It also provides you with the opportunity to ask any questions you may have.

We hope this webpage provides you with the information about the school you require and gives you an idea of what we offer.

Should you have any questions please contact the school and we will be only too happy to assist.

Understandably parents want the best possible start for their children and look for a school with the right mixture of high educational standards and an environment where their child can be happy, thrive and succeed. We believe that Christleton Primary School will provide this for your child.

We strive to give children the best possible education and to provide opportunities for pupils to reach the highest possible standards in all areas of school life in a safe, secure and caring environment.

Our curriculum is rich, child-centred, interesting and exciting, whilst also being aspirational and always offering our pupils a challenge. Pupils are encouraged to work from first-hand experiences which develop their interest and motivate their learning by giving them a sense of purpose for their work.

We believe that education should be an exciting journey and every child should leave our school with a love of learning that will remain with them throughout their lives.

We hope that this page provides you with a flavour of the school and what we have to offer.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many children will be in my child’s class?

As a one form entry school we have space for thirty children.

How many members of staff are in the classroom?

We always have a full time teacher and a teaching assistant in the EYFS classroom. Our EYFS lead is Mrs King and she is supported by Ms Speed.

How do you teach reading?

We use Read Write Inc. as our daily phonics programme to teach phonics skills. This is taught every day and delivered by three staff in the reception classroom.

How will I know how my child is getting on?

We strongly encourage parents to be partners in their child’s education. We use a program called SeeSaw throughout school. This program facilitates open communication between home and the class teacher. We have an open door policy and encourage you to be involved as much as you are able. In addition to regular communication we hold information evenings, performances and several parents’ evening during the course of the year.

On a whole school level we use X (Twitter), Email and School Spider to communicate.

Will you visit my child’s preschool setting?

In our normal transition we do try to visit every child in their preschool or nursery setting as we would like to gain a full picture of your child before they start school.

How are the children assessed?

We use the Early Years Foundation Stage Profile to assess the children.

These assessments are recorded on a programme called Tapesty. This programme allows the teacher to upload comments, assessments, photographs, videos etc. which parents can then see at home. We view education as a partnership and encourage parents to be part of their child’s educational journey. The Tapestry program allows parents and carers to communicate directly with the class teacher and see the work their child has been doing in class.

My child has SEND

If your child has a special educational need or disability (SEND) it is important that we, as a school, are aware as early as possible. This enables us to put additional transition arrangements in place and ensure we are prepared for thier arrival. As an inclusive school we strive to meet the needs of all of our children. For this reason, it is vital that we have an awareness if your child has any additional requirements.

Do I need to pay for school dinners?

Currently all children in EYFS, Year 1 and Year 2 are entitled to a free school meal every day. Our school caters Edsentail, provide a choice of healthy meals each day. Further information can be found about this on the school website.

My child has allergies, what should I do?

We have several children in school who have allergies so please do not worry. When you receive your welcome pack there will be a medical form to complete where you can put all the information about your child's allergy. We have specialist school menus, so your child will still be able to have school dinners. Once your child has started school we ensure that all staff are aware of them. In the majority of circumstances children with allergies still sit with all their classmates at lunchtime and just take part in daily routines the same as everyone else. We are also an allergy aware school, so politely request that parents are mindful of this if they send any food items into school.

If your child has an epi pen or inhaler, we do ask for one to be kept at school in case of emergencies.

My child needs medication or cream; do I have to come to school to apply it?

If your child needs medication at any point when they are at school, you will be asked to complete a medical form. Once this is completed and signed, staff at school will then be able to give your child the required medication or support them with cream for things such as bad eczema.

What happens if my child has a toilet accident in school?

As part of the welcome pack we ask your permission to carry out intimate care should it be needed. If a child has a toilet accident in school, it will be dealt with as soon as we know about it. The child will be put into a clean change of clothes and we will discreetly hand you the wet clothes at the end of the day.

Do we have before and after school care?

Yes. We have both before and after school care which is run by S4YC. The morning session runs from 07:45 until 08:45 (when school starts) and the evening sessions run from 15:20 (when school finishes) until 17:45

We understand the importance of ensuring a smooth transition between pre-school / nursery settings and our school setting. We plan a thorough transition process, which can be viewed on our transition page by clicking here.

Our considered approach ensures that our children start school prepared and happy, which is vital. Each year we ask the parents their views on how well their children have settled into our school. The results of this questionnaire can be found on our parent feedback page by clicking here.
